Important Meeting

All Fairview Parents are invited to attend a special meeting that has been set up by Fairview PTA with Dr. Steipleman and Linda Quingley at Fairview Elementary on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. At the meeting, the district’s budget will be discussed as it relates to impending changes at Fairview. If you have questions prior to the meeting, please contact PTA President Sheila Chapman at sheila.chapman@mchsi.com.

If you haven’t already heard, the School Board has proposed a number of changes at Fairview next year. Assistant Principal Adrienne Patton will be transferred to Derby Ridge. One fifth grade teaching position will also be cut from Fairview. For next year (2011-2012 school year), this means that each of the three remaining fifth grade classrooms will have almost 30 students. At the meeting on May 2, the Fairview PTA will continue dialogue with Dr. Steipleman and Linda Quingley in an attempt to change this course of action and/or minimize the effect it will have on our children. Please come and show your support and ask questions. The best chance we have for combating these cuts at our school is when we unite together and make our voices heard.

Wednesday, March 23 is Donuts with Dads, from 7:45a to 8:20a.

March 28-April 1 is Spring Break. There are a number of offerings for camps in our community during that time. One such day camp is offered by Columbia Parks and Recreation at the ARC. Check out the current edition of Parks and Rec Leisure Times for more info.

April 11-22 will be MAP testing for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders... watch for more details.

April 15 is the deadline to ensure enrollment/transportation for your child to attend summer school. If you have not registered, you can find the forms at the Columbia Public Schools website. You can also find information there about the tuition-based Summer Enrichment Program.

Cookie Dough Pickup Change

Because of the snow during the week the Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Fundraiser orders were due, the pickup date for the dough has been changed. It is now Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Please make arrangements to pick up your dough orders at that time. Thanks for your support!

Need an outing this week to remind you that warmer days are coming and swimsuit season is near? Get a sneak peek of world class swimming at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

Swimming’s Olympic and World Champions hit the water at the Mizzou Aquatic Center, Friday, February 18th through Monday, Feb 21, 2011 to compete in the Missouri Grand Prix. Spectators in the Mizzou Aquatic Center are closer to the action and the athletes than at any other contest of this caliber. It is an amazing opportunity for Mid-Missourians to experience an Olympic-style event with world–class athletes at an affordable price.

As an added bonus, we would like to invite all elementary and middle school aged children and their families to the Mizzou Aquatic Center for a no charge sneak peak, Thursday, February 17th from 5pm-8pm to watch these elite swimmers prepare for the weekend’s races in a relaxed swimming environment.

Please enter through the East Entrance of the MU Student Recreation Complex, located on Hitt and Rollins.

I know I always start off with a comment about the weather and I'd like to do something different... but can't do it on such a beautiful, crisp day as today! It's football/apple-picking/pumpkin-carving weather for sure! I love it!

Passport Book Sales begin next week. This is a great fundraiser for our school and an opportunity for savings to anyone who buys a book. I know our family always earns back what we spent on the book with our savings at Hy-Vee alone! Watch for the books in your child's backpack next week.
Early Dismissal on Wednesday, October 20. School will let out at 1:15 p.m.
It's the time of year that many think about ways to help the less fortunate. Due to budget cuts, The Salvation Army is unable to pay people bell ringers this year. They need volunteers to do this very important job. Contact Cindy Chapman at cynthia_chapman@usc.salvationarmy.org, 442-3229 x225.
Save the date: the PTA's next wellness event is November 4, 2010 at 6-8pm at Empire Roller Rink. Watch for more details!

Be a Superhero for Columbia Public Schools and help them break a World Record!

This free event will start at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 on Hickman High School's football field. Anyone willing to participate is invited. The goal is 1581 superheroes.

Costume guidelines:
Each person must be dressed as a recognized superhero.
A recognized superhero is one that has been used in a published book, comic, television program or film.
Each person's costume must be instantly recognizable as the superhero they are portraying.

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather and appreciating the changing seasons. There was a good turnout for the Open House this past Tuesday. Thanks to all who attended! A few announcements:

Information on activities outside of the school (Mizzou games/passes, Parks & Recreation, other community announcements) will no longer be sent home in the Friday Folders. If you are interested in information about community activities, please visit the PTA Center in the school's lobby for available flyers. Announcements will also be posted on this blog, as information becomes available.
Fairview students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades can sign up for Parks & Recreation Active Kids Club, which meets each Monday from 3:50 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. to participate in a variety of sport activities. Parents can call Parks & Recreation to sign up, or contact Dayton Grover at DQG@GoColumbiaMO.com. Flyers with additional information are available at the PTA Center.
The MU Volleyball team is hosting Youth Volleyball League this fall and at Fairview the league will meet on Friday mornings from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Registration costs $10 per student and includes instruction, t-shirt, and volleyball. Information can be found at the PTA Center of visiting the MU Volleyball Site, where there is a link to the registration form.

Welcome back, everyone! I hope this post finds everyone well and having had a successful first week back at school. Just a few announcements:

* Columbia Parents for Public Schools (CPPS) is holding its annual meeting tomorrow night, Thursday, August 26 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Columbia Public Library. Activities will be provided for kids, and refreshments will be available. The agenda is: 5:00 p.m. - Parent to Parent Dialogue, 5:45 p.m. - Business Meeting, 6:15 p.m. - Questions and P2P Dialogue, and 6:30 p.m. - Learn about the Superhero Event.

* Save the date: The Fairview Fever Festival will be here before you know it, on Friday, October 1.

* The University of Missouri Volleyball family would like to invite Fairview Elementary School to four games this season. Those games are on September 22, October 6, October 30, and November 24. Special activities are planned each night. See below for details on each match:

September 22nd “Dig for the Cure”
Match Information:
Mizzou Volleyball invites you to Fairview Elementary School Night on Wednesday, September 22nd at 6:30 pm vs. TEXAS! Come and represent your school, get autographs from the players and cheer on the tigers with friends and family; all for FREE! Columbia Public Schools will be receiving free admission vouchers for the “Dig for the Cure” match. Mizzou Volleyball will be fundraising for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Look for your pink vouchers in the Friday folder before the game.

“Dig for the Cure” will be a great experience joining the Mizzou Volleyball program to show support for the fight against breast cancer by sporting pink. The team will be wearing pink uniforms that will be autographed and auctioned off at MUTigers.com . You will have opportunities to win t-shirts and Mizzou Volleyballs during the match and after the match the players will sign autographs on our 2010 posters. Updates and March PTA Board Meeting Minutes

Just a couple of requests for help this week:

The Health Room is in dire need of girls' and boys' pants and shorts sizes 10 and up. If you have kids who are (or were!) that size, now is a good time to clean out clothes worn in cooler weather and last year's summer things! Bring those extras to the Health Room!

Also, the PTA was contacted by Lisa Peterson, a student at MU working on a project with the Columbia Art League. They are researching how Columbia parents choose summer camps, and why the Columbia Art League’s programs may or may not appeal to them. They have put together an online survey of questions. Parents who take the survey and fill out the contact information section at the bottom will be entered into a drawing to win a free camp session (1 week) for their child! You can find the survey here. The Columbia Art League offers Summer Art Camps for children ages 6-13. The camps are built to encourage kids and young artists to explore their creativity while receiving quality art instruction in downtown Columbia. Each week-long session has a different theme and runs Mon.-Fri., 9:00am-3:00pm. Camps begin June 14 and end August 13. The cost for non-CAL members is $175/week, $160 for CAL members.

Minutes and Treasurer’s reports were approved.

CCPTA: Sheila circulated the document from CCPTA regarding support of the upcoming bond issue, all in attendance were in favor of Fairview PTA supporting it.

Book Fairs: Laurie reported via email that $5000 was the total from the Scholastic book fair and $280 was raised from the used book sale.

Community Fundraisers: Kim reported on Culver’s, haven’t received check from them, but expecting around $200. Will have a fundraiser at Noodle’s and Co. near the end of school.

Fifth Grade Party: Nothing yet.

Literacy/Media Center: Jill Orr suggested a donation of library book program in honor of a child’s birthday. Jill will get more information and report back.

Rebate Programs: Mrs. Patton reported the new equipment from the Box Tops program is here and will be on the playground as the warm weather approaches.

Reflections: Two Fairview winners have also won at the state competition and will be recognized at the April PTA general meeting and school assembly.

Room Parent Coordinator: Christine sent a survey to room parents to see how the new structure for class parties has worked this year. Jill Orr and Christine recently met to discuss Staff Appreciation week.

School Supplies: Lisa Toler will have information at Kindergarten Roundup. Sheila also mentioned a summer workbook program she will gather more information on.

Sportswear: Lisa Paten is working on the sale of gently used Fairview items for the Ice Cream Social in April.

Staff Appreciation: Judy reported on upcoming events for Staff Appreciation and Teacher Appreciation week. Items mentioned included a 5^th grade breakfast for teachers and staff walk.

Wellness: Lisa reported they are working on the new playground project for the kindergarten playground. The Friday morning walk around the track will begin April 9^th from 8:30-8:45 am. The walking mini-course has gone well, Walking School Bus has started up for the spring, and Walk to School Day is set for May 7^th. Lisa also introduced the idea of a monthly event to promote wellness. She will present more information on this at an upcoming meeting.

Yearbook: Orders and money have come in.

Special Programs: Sheila said all of the field trips have been scheduled and the cost estimate is around $1800. Mrs. DeMoss gave a list of all field trips.

Kindergarten: Dairy Farm

1^st Grade: TRYPS

2^nd Grade: Runge Nature Center

3^rd Grade: Kaleidoscope

4^th: Capitol trip to Jefferson City

5^th: Churchill Memorial

Mrs. Patton: Said the daily announcements are going well, be sure to let her know if you have an event or item to announce.

Mrs. DeMoss: Multicultural Night is Thursday, March 18^th. Let her know if you can volunteer to help. Mini-courses are almost over and have gone well. 4^th and 5^th grade math contest is coming up and Thursday, June 3^rd will be the 5^th grade graduation at 6:30 pm. A draft calendar for the 2010-2011 is on the Columbia Public Schools website and the school board should be deciding the final day of school for this year. Kindergarten registration is scheduled for March 17^th from 2:30-6:30 pm. Finally, MAP testing will begin the Tuesday after Spring Break.

April Announcements

Hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break this year! The signs of spring are beautiful right now, aren't they?
Less than two calendar months left of the school year, so things are getting busy. Here are your updates:

April 6-16: MAP Testing for 3, 4, and 5th graders. Grades 3 and 4 begin testing at 9:00 a.m. each day, and grade 5 starts at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to send your kiddos out the door with a health breakfast for brain power!
April 9: Fitness Friday. This will repeat each Friday... between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., students of all grades are invited to walk on the track. Parents are welcome!
April 20: Donuts with Dads. 7:45 a.m. - 8:20 a.m. in the cafeteria.
April 21: Administrative Professionals Day. Don't forget to say "thank you" to the school secretaries that help keep the school days organized!
April 26-30: School Walk for Diabetes. Information has been sent home about walking with your child during his/her PE class for the week. If you did not receive it, contact your child's teacher or the school office.
April 27: PTA/Choir Concert/School Ice Cream Social. The PTA meeting and choir concert begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the ice cream social from 7-8:30 p.m.

Looking ahead, please note that there has been a change in the school calendar. May 21st was previously set as a collaboration day for teachers for the entire day. It has now been changed to early release day - school will dismiss on May 21 at 1:15 p.m., rather than being out the entire day. The Last Day of School is now Friday, June 4, and school will dismiss that day at 1:15 p.m. as well. This is a change from the previously announced last day (Monday, June 7).

Wednesday, March 17: School Cooks Day - remind your kids to thank the cooks for all they do each day!

Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19: Spring Pictures!! Pre-K, 1, 3, and 5 grades will be on Thursday; K, 2 and 4 pictures will be on Friday. According to the materials sent home from the photographer, siblings may arrange for photos to be taken together on Friday morning from 8-9:00.

Thursday, March 18: Multicultural Celebration - 6:30-7:15: meet and greet and enjoy potluck dinner; 7:15-8 p.m.: enjoy music, dancing and crafts.

Isn't it a bad sign when you can count the times you have seen the sun in the past 3 weeks on one hand??!! Everyone at our house is ready for Spring, and I'm sure you are too. Here are a few announcements to keep us looking toward the future and plugging along...

Most classes are planning for Valentine Parties, coming up on Friday, February 12. Many classes will be holding parties from 2:45 - 3:15 that day; check with your child's teacher or room parent for specific details.
Donuts for Dads will be on Tuesday, February 23 from 7:45-8:20 a.m. This is a nice opportunity for kids to have some special morning time with Dad.
Also on Tuesday, February 23 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. - treat yourself to dinner at Culver's!! 10% of the sales are donated to Fairview Elementary. The Culver's mascot, Scoopie, will be making an appearance, too!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up at the end of the month: Thursday, February 25 and Friday, February 26. Sign up forms will be coming home this week. There will be a Book Fair during the conferences as well: from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30-10:00 a.m. on Friday.
Don't forget these upcoming dates when school will not be in session: Monday, February 15 (President's Day), Friday, February 19 (Teacher Work Day), and Friday, February 26 (Parent Teacher Conferences).

Don't forget to eat at Subway tonight!! Go to the Forum Shopping Center Location today, Wednesday, January 27 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and 15% of the proceeds from your purchase are donated back to Fairview Elementary. Make sure to tell them you are there for the fundraiser!
Yearbook order forms will be coming home starting this Friday, January 29. Orders must be returned to the office by Tuesday, February 16. Books cost $11, payable by cash or check to Fairview PTA. The yearbooks will arrive in May.
Another fundraiser is coming up... with another good reason to take a break from cooking at home! One of my daughters was staring intently at a calendar this week. I noticed, asked her what she was doing, and she looked up at me and proclaimed proudly, "Only 51 days until Christmas!!" I don't know if she was right - it scared me too bad to check. Where does time go??!!

The PTA Board is meeting on November 9 at 11:30.
Passport Coupon Books are for sale until November 10. The books sell for $25.00 and are filled with coupons to use in the community and surrounding areas (Boonville, Moberly, Fulton, Mexico, and Jefferson City). A portion of the sales are donated to the Columbia Public Schools Foundation, and another portion comes back to Fairview Elementary.
EDITED 11/10: NEW DATE!!!!! Donuts for Dads is rescheduled for November 18, from 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday, November 12 from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m., and Friday, November 13 from 8:00 a.m. - noon. Contact your child's teacher for your specific time.
During Parent/Teacher Conferences, the Fairview PTA will be sponsoring a Scholastic Book Sale from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday the 12th, and 8:30 -10:30 a.m. on Friday the 13th, in the school gymnasium.

It's been a damp week... but not much will stop the kiddos from celebrating Halloween today at Fairview. Just a few announcements...

Columbia Public Schools Foundation - Papa John's Fundraiser lasts through tomorrow, October 31. Pizza lovers who order Papa John's pizza will have 20% of their purchase donated back to Columbia Public Schools - 10% to your individual school and 10% to the CPS Foundation. You must provide the school code when ordering... Fairview's code is CPSF06. You can find more information and coupons on this flyer from Papa John's.

Wednesday, November 4 is Picture Re-take day. If your child missed pictures the first time or needs his/her picture retaken, contact your child's teacher or the school office for the appropriate forms.

The November school lunch menu has been posted. Choose a day to lunch with your kiddo!

I hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy the brief reprieve from the rain and nastiness. How nice it has been to get outside and enjoy the fall colors! This week's reminders:

TONIGHT, October 21, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., when you purchase food at Subway's Forum location, a percentage of the proceeds come back to Fairview Elementary PTA. Come on out!
Tomorrow, October 22, is an early-release day. Fairview Elementary releases at 1:15 p.m.
Coming right up are Halloween Room Parties, set for each classroom on Friday, October 30. Most parties are from 2:45 - 3:15, but check with your child's teacher and/or room parent for specifics!

It's feeling more like winter than it should in October!! Hope everyone is staying warm and dry. I didn't realize that my kiddos would need warm coats quite this quickly!

Greetings, all! It was great to see so many of you at the Fairview Fever Festival last Friday. I don't think any of the kids actually felt the cool temperatures, even though some grownups may have!

Next week, don't forget:

Wednesday, October 14 is Lunchroom Supervisor Day. I have eaten lunch with my kids at Fairview a number of times, and am always impressed by the care the supervisors take with all of our children. Be sure to say "thank you" to them!
Friday, October 16 is Fairview Fever Day. Remind your child to show his or her school spirit by wearing Fairview-wear or the school colors - blue, yellow and white!

Friday night is the Fairview Fever Festival!! Be sure to support the PTA's major fundraiser of the year. The money raised improves the educational experience for all of our children.

Festival Details:
Games, Food, and Fun begin at 4:00 p.m. and last until dusk. The activities are set up on the playground. Should we be hit with inclement weather, the fun will still go on but will be inside the school. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Games include: Football Throw, Hoop Shoot, Baseball Throw, Cake Walk, Candy Bar Walk, Soda Toss, Sandy Candy, Hair Salon, Dunking Booth, and more!! Tickets or wristbands are available for purchase at the festival, if you did not pre-pay. Don't forget the silent auction and raffles, as well.

Other Announcements:
October 7 is another busy day of celebration at Fairview: International Walk to School Day, Track Dedication, and School Custodian's Day, too!

International Walk to School Day gives children, parents, teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event and celebrate the many benefits of walking! Fairview students (and parents!) will meet on Wednesday, October 7 at either: Fairview United Methodist Church (3200 Chapel Hill Road) or Fairview Road Church of Christ (201 S. Fairview Road) to walk. Continental breakfast is provided, but you should RSVP to the Fairview Office by Monday, October 5 so they can plan appropriately for breakfast.
Fairview Track Dedication Ceremony will also be the morning of the 7th at 9:00 a.m. All Fairview students will attend with their teacher, but parents are welcome to attend as well. Mayor Hindman will be our guest speaker. The PTA received a grant of $20,000.00 from the city through the City Park Sales Tax to build the new track, which is used daily by our children.
School Custodian's Day will also be celebrated on the 7th. Be sure to take time to thank the men and women who keep Fairview such an aesthetically pleasing place for our kids to learn!

Greetings, Fairview Parents! I hope everyone is having a great start to the school year. It's hard to believe that our kids have already been in school for a month!

The Fairview PTA is hoping to make regular announcements on this blog. Please check back regularly; new information will typically be posted on Wednesdays.

Today's PTA announcements:

You should have received information on our big fundraiser - the Fairview Fever Festival, coming up on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. There will be food available for purchase, games with prizes for the kids (carnival games, cake walk, and hair studio are some of the highlights!), a raffle, and a silent auction. You can find a full list of silent auction items, print more raffle tickets, and see other information on the Fairview Elementary website.

Other reminders and information:

This year's first "Donuts with Dads" was this morning. The next breakfast is Wednesday, October 21st, from 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. This program is sponsored by All Pro Dad.

May Reminders

The end of a school year is a bitter sweet time for me. I am happy to see my children more and am proud of them for learning so much, yet I'll miss the teachers and have to accept they have one more year of school behind them.

There are a few more items the PTA will need to take care of before the year is over.

Teachers Appreciation week. The activities are a bit different this year. Don't forget to send an item with your child for your teachers basket. Also, ask your child what they might write on the teachers door.
The last PTA board meeting will be Monday, May 11, 7:00 pm.
The Ice Cream Social is May 12, 7:00-8:30 following the General PTA meeting and Choir concert.
Please remember to turn in your volunteer forms for next year's committees.

still up in the air, waiting on a sponsor.

– Gay reported that the yearbook is at the printer. Fifth
graders will get one compliments of the PTA. Although orders were
down, she did order 350 as we’ve always sold that number in
the past.

1.) Mrs.
Demoss is working on the school calendar for next year and will
present that next month.

2.) We
do have an approved school calendar. The Elementary and Middle School
will have the same calendar. School will start on Aug. 24^th
and ending June 9^th (this includes building in six snow
days – mandated by state law). This includes two weeks off at
Christmas.

3.)
Tuesday, June 2^nd will be the last day of school and it
will be an early release day.

4.) Mrs.
Patton has still not had her baby. Debby Barksdale is helping on and
off during Mrs. Patton’s pregnancy and maternity leave.

5.) Karen
Knox, literacy coach, will not be returning. Her position was
eliminated. Mrs. Heuer is retiring. Candy Abadir will be taking the
fourth grade vacancy. One fifth grade teacher will be moving down to
teach fourth grade next year.

I.) Call to Order
PTA President Joyce Miller called the meeting to order at 7 p.m... She thanked the members present for coming to the meeting. The following PTA Board Members were in attendance: Sheila Chapman, Debbie Fisher, Susan Hartnagel, Judy Irelan, Joyce Miller, Chris Teddy, Christine Simon, Robin May, and Mary Ann Daugherty.

II.) Old Business
A.) The minutes of the previous board meeting were approved.
B.) Fairview PTA Treasurer’s Report was presented by Chris Teddy. Balance is $26,700.59, which includes proceeds from book fair. We still owe Scholastic for the books so that will be deducted. Community fundraiser funds are included: $135 from Smokin’ Chicks, $177 from Shakespeare’s.

III) New Business
A.) Chairperson Reports

1.) CCPTA: Chris Teddy discussed the PTA Legislative Rally held at Mill Creek Elementary on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. She said it was a successful meeting.
2.) New Book Fair: Comments were positive regarding the book fair.
3.) Used Book Fair: All went well; using the Library Club seemed to be a great idea.

5.) Community Fundraisers: Susan Hartnaegal reported that the Shakespeare’s night on Feb. 24th raised $177. We discussed having one more fundraiser night and it was suggested that another night at Shakespeare’s or Chevy’s is most favorable.

They are working with Christine and room parents to come up with new, exciting ideas for Teacher Appreciation week. Room parents will be gathering gifts for a basket to give at the end of the week.
20.) Volunteer Coordinator – Susan reports the online reporting of volunteer hours. Follow the link from the online blog to do so.
21.) Wellness: Lisa reported that Dr. Jenson has selected us to receive funds for our track, but is still in the approval process. She estimates that we would get the full $20,000 to cover the cost of the project. Joyce will contact him asking him how we can expedite the process. She also reported that Walk to School Day will be May 8th. She is trying to coordinate a breakfast and with efforts with PedNet.
Kids on Track: Fairview Challenge; Boone Hospital is not sponsoring, but the YouZeum will. Lisa is trying to work with them to see if the Kids on Track: Fairview Challenge will still be feasible.

Joyce and Sheila would like to know which committee chairs would like to stay in their position or serve on the board in another role.

IV.) Remarks by Principal Mrs. Demoss
1.) Mrs. DeMoss announced that Mrs. Patton is working part-time, 10-2 for at least 3 weeks, due to minor complications with her pregnancy.
2). Kindergarten registration is April 15th. CPS is doing a district-wide, two-day registration from 4:30-6:30, which will be the advertised time. However, Fairview will do registration from 2:30 to 6:30. Hospitality committee will provide snacks. Sheila will have a PTA volunteer table and school supply kits will be available too.
3.) The Fairview Falcon has been named “Freedom.” The Hello Freedom books will be in May and we’ll have books available then. Any proceeds made on the project go to literacy efforts.
4.) She explained that CPS administration is exploring doing a late start district wide to make time for teacher collaboration efforts. This would involve dismissing at 2:55 (50 minutes early) once a week, and adding 10 minutes to the morning (8:40 start). Mrs. DeMoss encouraged parents to provide her with feedback regarding this proposal.
5.) Rachel Willenburg, the school nurse, came and announced that the Diabetes Walks will be March 30, 31 and April 1. She needs parents to walk with every class. Lisa will help get these necessary volunteers.
6.) Mrs. DeMoss thanked us for the flowers she and Mrs. Patton received last week for Principal’s Day.
7.) Debby Barksdale will be assisting Mrs. DeMoss when Mrs. Patton goes on maternity leave.
V.) Next Meeting and Adjournment
A.) The next PTA Board Meeting will be held April 13, 7:00 pm.

February Board Announcements

Missouri PTA and Columbia Council PTA will be hosting a local legislative Kids First Rally with area legislators expected to attend. The rally will be held February 19th at Mill Creek Elementary, 2200 Nifong Blvd. West, Columbia (65203) with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
If you or your spouse works for State Farm, you may be eligible for the State Farm Good Neighbor Grant for Fairview. Please contact Judy Irelan judy.irelan.lfjd@statefarm.com to find out about this simple process.
The 2009-2010 PTA officers were elected at the general PTA meeting last night. President: Sheila Chapman Vice President: Susan Hartnagel Secretary: Chris Teddy Treasurer: Amy Pescalia These ladies will begin filling the PTA board positions for next year in the spring.
Book Fairs are right around the corner (2/26 & 27) and Laurie still needs some help. Thursday: I need at least 3 more people from 4:30 to 6:30. If someone wants to join me during the day from 8:30-12:00 Patty had suggested 2 people but I imagine I can do it myself. Friday: I need 1 person from 8:00 to 10:00Please email Laurie Kingsley kinglaurie@aol.com if you can help out.

What's for dinner?....Why Shakespear's of course.

Lucky us.....we get a reason to head to Shakespear's for dinner this month.

Fundraising flyers will be sent home in Friday folders February 20th for a Fairview fundraising night Tuesday, February 24th.

Make sure you bring your flyer to the restaurant for it to be valid. (they attach that to your receipt so we can collect our 15%). You are welcome to visit either location, downtown or the West, all day on the 24th.

This is good for dine in, carry-out and even their frozen pizza's.

Call some friends and we'll see you there.

MONDAY, Nov. 10, 2008
Call to Order
PTA President Joyce Miller called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.. She thanked the members present for coming to the meeting. The following PTA Board Members were in attendance: Sheila Chapman, Kim Deutschmann, Pattie Faber, Debbie Fisher, Susan Hartnagel, Elizabeth Hoffmann, Robin May, Joyce Miller, Lisa Monsees, Judy Irelan, Lisa Paten, Amy Pescaglia, Christine Simon, Chris Teddy and Eva Vasquez.
Old Business
The minutes of the previous board meeting held Oct. 6, 2008 were approved.
Fairview PTA Treasurer’s Report was presented by Chris Teddy. Balance is $22,098.05. Profits from the FFF were down from last year, as expected.
III) New Business
Chairperson Reports
CCPTA: Chris Teddy did attend the MO PTA Convention. She recommended that we send someone to this convention in the future.
New Book Fair: Patti said she could use some additional volunteers on Wednesday afternoon to set up. Thursday and Friday are covered, although additional coverage could be used on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. She and the committee are providing a continental breakfast for teachers on Thursday morning as they preview the book fair.
Used Book Fair: Collections are going well and Jan Leonard can use help running the book fair on Thursday and Friday.
Bylaw Review: Chris Teddy reminded the board that this review is done every three years to update. To change our bylaws, it is necessary to present the changes to our general membership. There are some required changes due to MO PTA’s change in their by-laws, and these changes do not have to be approved by the general membership. The board approved the bylaw committee review changes.
Community Fundraisers: Susan Hartnaegal reminded the board that the Chevy’s fundraiser is next Tuesday, Nov. 18. Public relations efforts are underway to encourage participation. Thursday, Dec. 11, is Fairview’s Chuckie Cheese fundraiser. Students will get a sticker for 10 free tokens. Teachers get free merchandise for attending too.
Fairview Directory: They have been distributed.
Fairview Fever Festival: Board members involved with the FFF met earlier in the month to debrief for next year. Joyce thanked everyone for their tireless efforts.
Fifth Grade Party: no report
Hospitality: Helen Katz is taking care of the cake for DARE graduation. Eva is looking into the committee providing poinsettias for the offices in December.
Spring Ice Cream Social: Plans will begin after Christmas.
Literacy Room Coordinators: Media Center: Coverage is going well.
Membership:
READ-a-thon: The literacy event will be March 2-6 and further planning will occur after Christmas.
Rebate Programs: We were encouraged to keep participating in these programs.
Reflections: The theme for the MO PTA Reflections program is “Wow!” There will be a information blurb in the December newsletter. Packets will be sent home to students in the Thanksgiving Friday folders so they can work on them during the holidays. Submissions are due Jan. 16th.
Room Parent Coordinator: Christine reports that the Halloween parties went well. he will send out a packet to room parents with ideas for Valentine’s Day parties.
School Supplies: The contract has been signed and we were able to get the lowest possible price, even lower than last year. We will work on marketing the program to make sure our families know what a value it is and that it is not a fundraiser.
Sportswear: Lisa is considering pre-ordering merchandise next year. She has talked with other schools who do this and it seems to work well.
Staff Appreciation: Next Thursday, Nov. 20, is going to be Pie day, where staff will be treated to pies. Plans for December are tentatively for a cookie exchange. The committee will meet after Christmas to start work on Teacher Appreciation week.
Volunteer Coordinator – Susan Reid again reminded all of us to keep track of hours and turn them in.
Wellness: Lisa Monsees reported that the city’s estimate on the proposed Fitness Track is $20,000. She submitted a proposal to Dr. Jenson and is waiting for his response. She cannot estimate a timeline for his response, as it has already been three weeks.

1.) Mrs. Demoss brought the idea of a digital timer/bookmark. The literacy coach thought it might be something that parents would be interested in. There is a possibility of selling them to parents for a small fundraiser.

3.) She was happy with the decision to dismiss school on Election Day, as there were more than 1,200 voters.
4.) There are two new wooden benches in the lobby purchased by retired Fairview teachers. 5.) They also purchased one for the playground.
